On April 18 Shelby County Deputy Matthew Smith was riding his motorcycle east bound on US 280 in Chelsea Al. At that time a small 4 door passenger car pulled out in front of him causing him to lay down his bike and crash into the rear bumper of the vehicle.

Deputy Smith ended up losing his left leg from below the knee and down.

He is currently a deputy with the Shelby County Sheriffs Office and has a wife and 2 young children.

Matt Smith is first and foremost a husband, and a father of two, he has made it his mission in life to help others before himself. He has selflessly put his life on the line for his community during his career as a Sheriff's Deputy. Due to this accident, his career has been put on hold because of the injury.
